Stadler Rheineck-Walzenhausen
Exterior Design | Interior Design
For the historic Rheineck–Walzenhausen Railway, we designed a new generation of vehicles for Appenzeller Bahnen. The 1.9-kilometre route is set to become the world’s first fully automated interurban railway to combine adhesion and rack operation at GoA4 level.
The new vehicle retains the distinctive character of the existing railway while giving it a modern, forward-looking identity. Key features include a large panoramic window overlooking Lake Constance, a contemporary reinterpretation of the line’s characteristic wooden seats and a spacious, fully accessible interior.
The result is a vehicle that respects the railway’s heritage while meeting the demands of fully automated operation.

For the Rheineck–Walzenhausen Railway, we created a bright, spacious and fully accessible interior that reflects the character of the route. Large windows, clean lines and refined wooden elements give the space a modern yet familiar feel, while making the surrounding landscape and views of Lake Constance a central part of the journey.
