Stadler SPT Metro Glasgow

Exterior Design | Interior Design

In close collaboration with GYSEV and Stadler, we developed an interior and exterior design that places a strong emphasis on passenger comfort and functionality.

The eleven new InterCity trains introduce a distinct new product category to GYSEV’s portfolio, deliberately differentiated from the operator’s existing regional fleet. Designed for longer journeys and long-distance services, the new trains offer a more premium and comfort-oriented travel experience while establishing a distinctive and clearly recognizable brand presence for the operator.

Ideation

A particular challenge was the exceptionally compact design envelope of the Glasgow Subway. The new vehicles are only around 39.5 m long, 2.31 m wide and 2.64 m high, and were developed specifically for the historic tunnel system, where the tunnels are only 3.4 m wide.

Driverless Metro System

As the Glasgow Subway is planned to operate fully autonomously in the future, the existing station infrastructure is also undergoing extensive modernization. One of the key upgrades is the introduction of platform screen barriers separating passengers from the tracks. To ensure that boarding areas remain easy to identify within the new system, the sliding doors of the barriers were visually coordinated with the vehicle doors in both colour and graphic design.

CMF Variants

For the color and material concept, a wide range of potential patterns and color combinations was developed. The design primarily explores the orange and grey tones of the operator’s corporate identity, complemented by the characteristic circular pattern that appears as a recurring design element throughout the metro system.
